A Guide to Playtech Casino Software

Chances are good that, if you’re not an American, you’ve played at an online casino powered by Playtech casino software.

How do we know?

Because they’re one of the oldest iGaming software companies still in business today. Their games are offered at most of the casinos we review nowadays.

We’ll look at their games here in a minute. But first, let’s talk a little bit about their company.

A Brief Overview of the Company

Playtech was co-founded by Teddy Sagi in 1999. He founded the company along with partners from the casino, software engineering, and multimedia industries.

Their first casino product launched in 2001.

A few years later, in 2006, Playtech went public with their company on London’s AIM market. They were valued at $950 million.

Though their IPO was successful, the timing couldn’t be worse – that was the same year the UIGEA passed in the United States. Playtech’s stock dropped 40% as a result.

Six years later, they moved to the main market of the London Stock Exchange, and were added to the FTSE 250 Index shortly after. Despite the temporary drop in stock, Playtech continued to grow, acquiring several companies over the past 5-10 years.

Some of the companies they’ve acquired include:

  • Videobet
  • Gaming Technology Solutions – At the time, GTS was one of the largest gaming aggregators in the industry.
  • Virtue Fusion Limited – They’re a developer and licenser of online bingo products.
  • Intelligent Gaming Solutions – A casino management solutions supplier.
  • PT Turnkey Solutions Limited – Another management solutions supplier.
  • Mobenga – A leading mobile gaming developer.
  • Ash Gaming – A game development studio.
  • Geneity Limited – A sportsbook software and platform supplier.
  • PokerStrategy.com – One of the largest poker communities online.

And many, MANY OTHERS.

As a result, they’ve become a massive force in not just the online casino industry, but in all of online gaming. Playtech powers dozens, if not more than 100 casinos, poker rooms, bingo halls, and sportsbooks. Some of the most popular brands using their software include William Hill, Bet365, and Ladbrokes.

Today, Playtech has 5,000+ employees, with offices in 17 different countries. They have 140 global licenses and are in 20 regulated jurisdictions.

Important!
All Playtech-powered casinos will prohibit American players from joining and playing for real money. But other (restricted) countries will vary from casino to casino.

Games You Can Play

Let’s look at some of the different casino games from Playtech you can play. According to their website, they have more than 600 games – though this will vary from casino to casino.

You can access their library from their download or browser casino, while half their library (300-ish games) is reportedly available via mobile phones and tablets.

Keep in mind that the following lists do not include every single game by Playtech. And they come out with games regularly. But this should be MOST of their games, and, at the very least, the following should give you an idea of what to expect from a Playtech-powered casino.

Important!
An important aspect of online gaming is the randomness (fairness) of each game. Randomness is tested by developers, operators, and/or 3rd party auditors.

We didn’t find anything specific about game testing on Playtech’s website. However, if you look at both Coral and Winner Casino, you’ll see that they both say their software is/was developed by Playtech, and that it’s tested rigorously for fairness and accuracy.

One of the things that stands out to us are all the superhero/comic book character-themed slots. There are several revolving around Marvel, for example, such as The Hulk, X-Men, Wolverine, Iron Man, and The Punisher. But then there are several DC slot machines to play, too, such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

You can see summaries of many of their slot machines here.

Playtech also has 30+ progressive jackpot games (mostly slots with a few others mixed in). Most of these are part of a progressive network, which means money is contributed to a game/jackpot no matter where the game is played from.

The one troubling thing we’ve heard is that many Playtech casinos have it in their terms and conditions that progressive jackpots are paid out in installments, with most payments being $10,000 or less. This can become a nightmare if you win a jackpot worth millions, as others have found out the hard way.

For that reason, you might want to be cautious as to which Playtech-powered casino you join. If you plan to play progressives, you might try to find a casino that doesn’t have any cash-out limits, or excludes progressive wins from their cash-out limits.

Card and Table Games

  • Baccarat
  • Blackjack
  • Blackjack Pro
  • Blackjack Surrender
  • Blackjack Switch
  • Lucky Blackjack
  • Perfect Blackjack

  • Casino War
  • Craps
  • Genie’s Hi Lo
  • Heads or Tails
  • Keno
  • Let Them Ride
  • Caribbean Poker
  • Pai Gow Poker

  • American Roulette
  • European Roulette
  • Video Roulette
  • Premium American Roulette
  • Premium European Roulette
  • Premium French Roulette
  • Premium Roulette Pro
  • Roulette Pro
  • Sic Bo

The two games that are clearly favored here are blackjack and roulette. Both games have several variants for you to choose from.

Even without those, though, Playtech has created a diverse selection of table and card games to choose from. They cover the basics, such as keno and casino hold’em, but offer less common options, such as pai gow poker and heads or tails.

You can see the different rules, payouts, and probability for their table and card games, as well as their video poker games (which we’ll list next) at the WizardOfOdds.com.

Video Poker

  • 2 Ways Royals
  • 10s Or Better
  • Aces & Faces
  • All American
  • Deuces Wild
  • Jacks or Better
  • Joker Poker
  • Pick’em Poker
  • Mega Jacks (Progressive)

They have a much smaller list of video poker games than you’ll find from other casino software providers. But they cover all the most popular options, as well as offer multi-hand and progressive variants.

Live Dealer Casino

  • Unlimited Blackjack
  • Prestige Blackjack
  • Roulette
  • Baccarat
  • Poker
  • Hi-Lo
  • Sic Bo
  • Single Zero Roulette
  • Prestige Roulette Lite
  • Speed Roulette
  • Baccarat 7 Seat
  • Baccarat Squeeze
  • VIP Baccarat
  • Mini Baccarat
  • Casino Hold’em

One of the unique things about Playtech, compared to other casino software developers, is that they have their own in-house live-dealer operation.

They have 3 major studios with “hundreds of state-of-the-art cameras broadcasting in premium HD quality.”

They run their games 24/7/365, unlike many others, who are on a much smaller schedule. Because, after all, these are real people who deal the games.

Other than their massive list of live games, players can also choose to play in their native language. Many languages are covered, which include: English, Italian, Russian, Romanian, Spanish, Mexican Spanish, and Mandarin, amongst several others.

The bottom line – Playtech covers a casino player’s needs from all angles. So, it’s no wonder why they’re considered one of the best.

From an Operator’s Perspective

We assume most people reading this are players – people who will only see the front end of Playtech, which includes their games, graphics, downloads, and so on.

But some people reading this may be interested in the business side of things, and may be interested in forming a business relationship with Playtech. They might want to start an online casino and offer their games.

With that in mind, here are some of the benefits to working with Playtech:

  • Playtech Open Platform (POP) licensees will have access to 600+ casino games, across and channel and on any device.
  • POP licenses will also receive game development kits, seamless 3rd party wallet integration, single-player accounts across all products, data integration, and more.
  • Playtech will take of your web hosting needs (if you want). That includes image hosting, DDoS prevention, 3rd party services, geo-location services, maintenance, and more.
  • They offer payment advisory services, which includes advice on marketing activities, new markets to target, advice on new payment services (per country and/or currency), and 50 different payment methods to choose from.
  • Playtech will help you with their marketing. This includes access to 50,000+ affiliates, experienced media buyers, and SEO experts – amongst many other things – that will help give you a well-rounded source of new customers.
  • Customer Support – They offer support for each of their products 24/7/365.

Their software is also equipped with responsible or safe gambling options. Players will be able to set financial and time limits, take time outs, or, if needed, exclude themselves from playing.

As for data protection, they talked about their approach to protecting customer data on page 47 of their most recent annual report.

What’s important to note here is that there are going to be new requirements that Playtech and their operators will need to follow per the EU General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). These regulations will be in full effect in May 2018.

Playtech doesn’t say what this means for them as a company, other than that they’ve appointed a new Data Protection Office; this person will work with the Chief Security Officer and risk committee to strengthen their defenses against cybercrime and future regulatory changes.

And that’s about it.

You can learn a little more about what operators will have to do to be in compliance by clicking the link provided.

But here’s a general idea:

  • Requiring the consent of subjects for data processing
  • Anonymizing collected data to protect privacy
  • Providing data breach notifications
  • Safely handling the transfer of data across borders
  • Requiring certain companies to appoint a data protection officer to oversee GDPR compliance

It sounds like Playtech is already on their way to complying with this, per their annual report. That’s a good thing, too, as there are penalties for failing to meet these requirements – such as fines of up to 2% or 4% of total global annual turnover, or €10m or €20m, whichever is greater.

Not to mention the (potential) loss of their customers’ information, and the fallout that would happen immediately after.

Conclusion

You cannot go wrong with Playtech.

From a customer perspective, you have hundreds of top-notch games to choose from – many of which you’ll find in brick-and-mortar casinos (or something very similar). That includes many of their licensed titles, too.

They also have plenty of table and card games, not to mention their own in-house live-dealer studio.

From an operator’s perspective, you can offer just about everything your customers will ever want – slots, blackjack, table games, live roulette, and so on. Not to mention these games are compatible with most major devices.

And above all, you can get support from Playtech in nearly every aspect of your business.

The bottom line – Playtech knows what they’re doing, which isn’t a surprise, given that they’ve been in the online gambling industry for nearly two decades.
